Olfactory Recognition Deficits

Olfactory recognition deficits are impairments in identifying, discriminating, or remembering familiar odors, providing important information about sensory processing and behavior. They can arise when odor molecules are poorly detected or when neural systems that encode odor features, associate them with memories, and support conscious recognition do not function normally. In behavioral research, these deficits help distinguish problems in odor perception from broader changes in attention, learning, memory, or motivation. Measuring performance with odor-identification and discrimination tasks can clarify how sensory information guides feeding, social behavior, threat detection, and other adaptive responses, while also supporting the study of brain disorders that affect olfactory function.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California The autonomic nervous system (ANS) controls the activity of the body's internal organs and regulates changes in their activity depending on the current environment. The vagus nerve, which innervates many of the internal organs, is an important part of the system. When our brain senses danger, vagal tone is inhibited, leading to a set of changes in the body designed to make us more prepared to fight or...

Olfactory sensory neurons express a wide variety of axon-sorting molecules to establish proper neural circuitry. This protocol describes an immunohistochemical staining method to visualize combinatorial expressions of axon-sorting molecules at the axon termini of olfactory sensory neurons.

Fundamental, yet unique properties of the rodent olfactory system have led to its increasing study among biologists. A relatively simple assessment of its function is then also needed. Here we describe sensitive tests for the characterization of mouse olfactory sensitivity and preference.
