Owner Warmth

Owner warmth is the degree of affection, responsiveness, and positive engagement a person shows toward an animal, making it an important aspect of the human–animal relationship and behavioral development. Through consistent social cues such as gentle contact, attention, and rewarding interactions, owners can influence how animals interpret human behavior, form attachments, and respond in everyday situations. Studying owner warmth helps researchers assess socialization, trust, stress-related behavior, and the quality of companion-animal relationships. It also informs behavior assessment, welfare research, and guidance for interactions that support positive outcomes for both animals and their owners.

The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence categorization, a person will feel...

This video demonstrates an in vivo imaging technique for detecting and quantifying eye inflammation in a mouse model of post-infectious uveitis. The technique, known as optical coherence tomography (OCT), generates high-resolution cross-sectional images of the eye for assessing disease progression.

Inflammation

Overview In response to tissue injury and infection, mast cells initiate inflammation. Mast cells release chemicals that increase the permeability of adjacent blood capillaries and attract additional immune cells to the wound or site of infection. Neutrophils are phagocytic leukocytes that exit the bloodstream and engulf invading microbes. Blood clotting platelets seal the wound and fibers create a scaffold for wound healing. Macrophages engulf aging neutrophils to end the acute inflammatory...
