Phantom Acupoints

Phantom acupoints are locations used in acupuncture research that do not correspond to recognized acupuncture points, often serving as comparison sites in controlled experiments. Although intended to provide a physiologically neutral control, needle insertion or pressure can still stimulate skin and sensory nerves, producing responses that may influence pain, stress, or behavior. Researchers therefore use phantom acupoints to examine how treatment location, sensory stimulation, expectation, and nonspecific effects contribute to observed outcomes. Careful selection and reporting of these sites strengthen behavioral studies by helping distinguish effects attributed to traditional point specificity from responses caused by the procedure itself.
