Respiratory Variability

Respiratory variability is the natural fluctuation in breathing rate, depth, timing, and pattern over time, providing a measurable window into physiological and behavioral state. These changes arise as neural and autonomic systems adjust ventilation to activity, posture, attention, emotion, stress, and environmental demands; measures such as inter-breath interval and breath amplitude capture this dynamic regulation. In behavioral research, respiratory variability helps characterize arousal, affect, cognitive effort, and interactions between bodily state and behavior. Careful analysis can distinguish flexible, context-sensitive breathing from unusually rigid or disrupted patterns, supporting research on stress responses, emotion regulation, communication, and health-related behavior.

Respiratory Exam I: Inspection and Palpation

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Disorders of the respiratory system with a chief complaint of shortness of breath are among the most common reasons for both outpatient and inpatient evaluation. The most obvious visible clue to a respiratory problem will be whether the patient is displaying any signs of respiratory distress, such as fast respiratory rate and/or cyanosis. In a clinical situation, this will always require...

Respiratory Exam II: Percussion and Auscultation

Source: Suneel Dhand, MD, Attending Physician, Internal Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Learning the proper technique for percussion and auscultation of the respiratory system is vital and comes with practice on real patients. Percussion is a useful skill that is often skipped during everyday clinical practice, but if performed correctly, it can help the physician to identify underlying lung pathology. Auscultation can provide an almost immediate diagnosis for a number of acute...

Variables and Equations of State

2026

The physical state of a pure substance can be defined by certain state variables such as volume (V), pressure (p), temperature (T), and amount of substance (n). When two gases are separated by a movable wall, the gas with the higher pressure naturally compresses the gas with the lower pressure. This causes the high-pressure gas to expand and the low-pressure gas to compress until both gases achieve mechanical equilibrium. At this point, their pressures equalize, and the movement of the wall...

Functions of Three or More Variables

A function of three variables assigns a single real number to each point in three-dimensional space. Every point is identified by its Cartesian coordinates, x, y, and z, and the function maps this ordered triple to a scalar value. Such functions are commonly used to describe physical quantities that vary throughout space.A representative example is the electric potential generated by a point charge. In this case, the potential at a given location depends only on the distance from the charge. If...
