Term Extraction

Term extraction is the process of identifying meaningful words and multiword expressions from unstructured text, helping researchers organize specialized knowledge and analyze how language represents behavior. It typically combines linguistic rules, such as part-of-speech patterns, with statistical measures of frequency, co-occurrence, and domain relevance to distinguish informative terms from common words. In behavioral science, term extraction can reveal recurring descriptions of actions, motivations, social interactions, or observable responses across interviews, field notes, and scientific literature. These outputs support qualitative coding, text mining, behavioral classification, and the development of searchable datasets for research synthesis.

Long-term Depression

2019

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. Calcium Ion Concentration Mechanism If over time, all...

Extraction Extraction is a common technique used in organic chemistry to isolate a target compound. In the extraction process, a solute is transferred from one phase to another to separate it from unreacted starting materials or impurities. Extraction is also used to facilitate the isolation of a solute from a reaction solvent that is difficult to remove by evaporation, such as a solvent with a high boiling point. Generally, there are three types of extractions. First, in solid-liquid...

Source: Calvo-Rodríguez, et al. Fluorescence and Bioluminescence Imaging of Subcellular Ca2+ in Aged Hippocampal Neurons. J. Vis. Exp. (2015). This video demonstrates the use of fluorescence imaging to measure cytosolic calcium levels in short-term and long-term rat hippocampal cultures. By comparing young and aged neurons, it highlights how increased L-type voltage-gated calcium channel density and prolonged activation in aged neurons result in calcium overloading, a hallmark of neuronal aging.

Extraction of Biomarkers from Sediments - Accelerated Solvent Extraction

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst The distribution of a group of organic biomarkers called glycerol-dialkyl glycerol-tetraethers (GDGTs), produced by a suite of archaea and bacteria, were found in modern sediments to change in a predictable manner in response to air or water temperature1,2. Therefore, the distribution of these biomarkers in a sequence of sediments of known age can be used to reconstruct the evolution of air and/or water temperature on...

C. elegans Positive Butanone Learning, Short-term, and Long-term Associative Memory Assays

Here we describe methods to test C. elegans associative learning and short- and long-term associative memory. These population assays employ the worms abilities to chemotax toward volatile odorants, and form positive associations upon pairing food with the chemoattractant butanone. Increasing the number of conditioning periods induces long-term memory.
