Vibro-tactile Masking

Vibro-tactile masking is a sensory phenomenon in which vibration reduces or alters the perception of another tactile stimulus, making it useful for studying how touch influences behavior. A vibrating stimulus activates mechanoreceptors in the skin and can interfere with the neural processing of nearby or simultaneous pressure, contact, or movement signals through temporal and spatial interactions. Researchers use vibro-tactile masking to examine attention, sensory integration, perception, and response selection. The approach also informs haptic interface design, rehabilitation technologies, and prosthetic feedback systems by showing how competing tactile signals affect detection, discrimination, and behavioral responses.

Here we explore contralateral tactile masking between the forearms in which tactile detection thresholds are modulated by vibration applied to a remote site. The details of which remote sites have an effect can tell us about how the body is represented in the brain.

Applying Incongruent Visual-Tactile Stimuli during Object Transfer with Vibro-Tactile Feedback

2019

We present a protocol to apply incongruent visual-tactile stimuli during an object transfer task. Specifically, during block transfers, performed while the hand is hidden, a virtual presentation of the block shows random occurrences of false block drops. The protocol also describes adding vibrotactile feedback while performing the motor task.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual masking is a term used by perceptual scientists to refer to a wide range of phenomena in which in an image is presented but not perceived by an observer because of the presentation of a second image. There are several different kinds of masking, many of them relatively intuitive and unsurprising. But one surprising and important type of masking is called Object Substitution Masking. It has been a focus of research in vision...

Acute and Chronic Tactile Sensory Testing after Spinal Cord Injury in Rats
