Non-heme Iron Binding

Non-heme iron binding is the coordination of iron by biological molecules without a porphyrin-based heme group, a process central to iron homeostasis and metal-dependent biochemistry. Iron ions bind through ligand atoms in amino acid side chains, small metabolites, or water, with coordination geometry and oxidation state influencing affinity, reactivity, and redox behavior. These interactions can stabilize iron for storage and transport or position it within enzyme active sites for oxygen activation, electron transfer, and substrate transformations. Studying non-heme iron binding helps explain the function of metalloproteins and the molecular consequences of iron imbalance in biological systems.
