Bioreactor Culture

Bioreactor culture is the controlled growth of cells, microorganisms, or tissues in a vessel designed to regulate conditions that influence biological production. Within the bioreactor, sensors and control systems maintain parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nutrient supply, and mixing, while agitation and aeration improve mass transfer and distribute resources throughout the culture. In bioengineering, this approach supports the production of vaccines, therapeutic proteins, biofuels, and engineered tissues. Bioreactor culture also enables researchers to scale biological processes from laboratory experiments to industrial manufacturing while monitoring cell performance, product yield, and process consistency.

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

Batch and Continuous Bioreactors

2023

Bioreactors are used to grow organisms in large volumes, thereby enabling the production of mass quantities of the target product. These reactors can be batch reactors, which contain all of the components needed for cell growth, or continuous reactors, which have inlet and outlet ports allowing for the addition of fresh growth media and the removal of cell waste. This video presents batch and continuous reactors and demonstrates the use of bioreactors to grow bacteria in the laboratory.

A rotating cell culture system that allows epithelial cells to grow under physiological conditions resulting in 3-D cellular aggregate formation is described. The aggregates generated display in vivo-like characteristics not observed in conventional culture models and serve as a more accurate organotypic model system for a multitude of scientific investigations.
