Chiral Normal Phase Hplc

Chiral normal-phase HPLC is a chromatographic method that separates enantiomers, molecules with identical connectivity but different three-dimensional arrangements, using a chiral stationary phase under normal-phase conditions. A relatively nonpolar mobile phase carries the sample through a polar stationary phase containing chiral selector sites; each enantiomer forms interactions of different strength, producing distinct retention times and enabling resolution. In bioengineering, the method supports enantiomeric purity assessment and quantification of chiral drug compounds, synthetic intermediates, amino acids, and other analytes. It helps researchers verify stereochemical control, monitor biocatalytic or synthetic processes, and evaluate product consistency during pharmaceutical and biomaterial development.

Ring-Shaped Micropatterning Cell Chirality Assay: An In Vitro Technique to Determine Multicellular Chirality Based on Cell Alignment on Ring-Shaped Micropatterns

In this video, we describe a cell chirality assay to determine the alignment bias of cells in a confined geometric boundary such as a ring micropattern. Chirality is an inherent property of most cell types and is determined by genetic and environmental factors. Knowing the chirality of a normal cell population can help to screen drug-treated cells.

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

2023

Source: Dr. Paul Bower - Purdue University High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is an important analytical method commonly used to separate and quantify components of liquid samples. In this technique, a solution (first phase) is pumped through a column that contains a packing of small porous particles with a second phase bound to the surface. The different solubilities of the sample components in the two phases cause the components to move through the column with different average...

Chirality

2023

Chirality is a term that describes the lack of mirror symmetry in an object. In other words, chiral objects cannot be superposed on their mirror images. For example, our feet are chiral, as the mirror image of the left foot, the right foot, cannot be superposed on the left foot. Chiral objects exhibit a sense of handedness when they interact with another chiral object. For example, our left foot can only fit in the left shoe and not in the right shoe. Achiral objects — objects that have...

Chirality in Nature

Chirality is the most intriguing yet essential facet of nature, governing life’s biochemical processes and precision. It can be observed from a snail shell pattern in a macroscopic world to an amino acid, the minutest building block of life. Most of the snails around the world have right-coiled shells because of the intrinsic chirality in their genes. All the amino acids present in the human body exist in an enantiomerically pure state, except for glycine - the sole achiral amino acid. The...

An Efficient and Rapid HPLC-QQQ-MS Method for the Quantitation of Tropane Alkaloids in Medicinal Plants

2026

This study developed a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (HPLC-QQQ-MS) method to identify and quantify tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, anisodamine, scopolamine) in Anisodus tanguticus. The method proved rapid, accurate, and reliable for high-throughput analysis of medicinal plants.
