Corneal Injury Repair

Corneal injury repair is the restoration of corneal structure and function after damage to this transparent tissue at the front of the eye, an important goal because disrupted clarity can impair vision. Repair begins when corneal epithelial cells migrate and proliferate to cover the wound, while deeper stromal tissue undergoes remodeling that can influence transparency and strength. In bioengineering, researchers apply biomaterials, scaffolds, and cell-based strategies to support healing and guide tissue regeneration. These approaches may improve wound closure, limit scar formation, and inform therapies for trauma, disease, and surgical damage while advancing the development of functional corneal substitutes.

Flexor tendons in the hand are commonly injured, leading to impaired hand function. However, the scar-tissue healing response is not well characterized. A murine model of flexor tendon healing is demonstrated here. This model can enhance overall understanding of the healing process and assess therapeutic approaches to improve healing.

Following injury, the integrity of the injured tissues must be reestablished. For example, in skin tissue, wound repair involves coordination among resident skin cells, blood mononuclear cells, extracellular matrix, growth factors, and cytokines to complete the healing cascade. Formation of Blood Clot In case of deep injuries, trauma to blood vessels results in blood loss. In the meantime, phospholipids released from the ruptured endothelial cellular membrane are converted into arachidonic...
