Dynamic Stress

Dynamic stress is a time-varying mechanical load that changes in magnitude, direction, or frequency, making it distinct from a constant or static stress. In bioengineering, researchers apply controlled cyclic, oscillatory, or transient forces to materials, cells, and tissues, where the resulting strain depends on loading rate, geometry, and viscoelastic behavior. These conditions can activate mechanotransduction pathways in living systems and reveal how engineered constructs respond to repeated use, fatigue, or deformation. Measuring dynamic stress supports the design and evaluation of biomaterials, tissue-engineered scaffolds, prostheses, and bioreactors, helping align laboratory models with physiological mechanical environments.

Visualization of G3BP Stress Granules Dynamics in Live Primary Cells

2014

Stress granules (SGs) are cytoplasmic RNA granules containing stalled ribonucleoprotein particles (RNPs), and important in cellular response to various stresses. Dynamics of SGs can be followed in live cells by visualizing the localization of a tagged component of SGs in transfected primary cells after stress.

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...

Examining the Dynamics of Cellular Adhesion and Spreading of Epithelial Cells on Fibronectin During Oxidative Stress

This method is useful for quantifying the early dynamics of cellular adhesion and spreading of anchorage-dependent cells onto the fibronectin. Furthermore, this assay can be used to investigate the effects of altered redox homeostasis on cell spreading and/or cell adhesion-related intracellular signaling pathways.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
