Metal Foam Template

A metal foam template is a porous, cellular metal structure used as a mold or architectural guide for producing materials with controlled, interconnected pores. During fabrication, a polymer, ceramic, hydrogel, or other biomaterial fills the foam’s cavities or coats its internal struts; solidification, crosslinking, or sintering preserves the geometry, while template removal can create an open porous network. In bioengineering, this approach helps reproduce tissue-like architectures and tune pore size, connectivity, mechanical strength, and transport pathways. Resulting structures can support cell attachment, nutrient exchange, vascularization, and tissue regeneration, while also providing models for studying how scaffold architecture influences biological performance.

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

DNA as a Genetic Template

2020

Two structural features of the DNA molecule provide a basis for the mechanisms of heredity: the four nucleotide bases and its double-stranded nature. The Watson-Crick model of double-helical DNA structure, proposed in 1952, drew heavily upon the X-ray crystallography work of researchers Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work in 1962. Franklin was, controversially, excluded from the prize for...
