Glass Slide Functionalization

Glass slide functionalization is the chemical modification of a glass surface to control its interactions with biomolecules, cells, or engineered materials. Because glass contains surface hydroxyl groups, treatments such as silanization can attach reactive molecules that introduce functional groups, alter wettability, and provide sites for covalent coupling or adsorption. In bioengineering, functionalized slides support cell adhesion, biomolecule immobilization, microarray fabrication, biosensor development, and microscopy-based assays. By tailoring surface chemistry and coating composition, researchers can regulate how biological interfaces form and improve the stability, selectivity, and reproducibility of experiments involving cells, proteins, and other biomaterials.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

The biotic portion incorporates plant residues, roots, organic matter, and microorganisms. Soil microbe abundance and diversity is expansive, as...

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

2025

When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed. Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide.
