Micellar Polymer Structure

Micellar polymer structure describes the nanoscale organization formed when amphiphilic polymers assemble in a solvent, with water-repelling segments clustered in an inner core and water-compatible segments exposed at the surface. Above a concentration or under solvent conditions that favor self-assembly, this arrangement lowers unfavorable interactions and produces structures such as spherical micelles, whose size and stability depend on block composition, chain length, and environmental conditions. In bioengineering, polymeric micelles can solubilize poorly water-soluble compounds, shield cargo, and support controlled delivery. Their tunable architecture also informs the design of carriers for drugs, imaging agents, and other biomedical materials.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

Tension Tests of Polymers

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Polymeric materials are widely used in civil structures, with uses ranging from very soft sealants to more rigid pipes in water and wastewater systems. The most basic definition of a polymer is a molecular structure with repeating subunits. The term polymer comes from Greek, where "poly" means many, and "-mer" means basic unit. Monomers, or single mers, are the specific repeating units. With...

The present work describes a method to fabricate micellar nanocrystals, an emerging major class of nanobiomaterials. This method combines top-down electrospray, bottom-up self-assembly, and solvent-based structure control. The fabrication method is largely continuous, can produce high quality products, and possesses an inexpensive means of structure control.

Depolymerizable Olefinic Polymers Based on Fused-Ring Cyclooctene Monomers

Here, we describe protocols for the preparation of trans-cyclobutane fused cyclooctenes (tCBCO), their polymerization to prepare depolymerizable olefinic polymers, and the depolymerization of these polymers under mild conditions. Additionally, protocols for the preparation of depolymerizable networks and compression molding of rigid linear plastics based on this system are described.
