Porcine Spine Model

A porcine spine model is an experimental representation of human spinal anatomy and biomechanics that uses pig vertebrae, intervertebral discs, or intact spinal segments to investigate spinal structure, function, and disease. Its value comes from testing how spinal tissues respond to controlled mechanical loading, motion, injury, degeneration, or surgical manipulation under defined laboratory or in vivo conditions, allowing researchers to measure changes in stability, pressure, stiffness, and tissue behavior. In bioengineering, these models support the evaluation of implants, fixation systems, biomaterials, imaging methods, and regenerative strategies while helping bridge bench research and eventual clinical translation.

Intrathecal Placement of Lumbar Drain: A Technique to Withdraw Cerebrospinal Fluid from the Lumbar Spine in Porcine Model

2025

This video describes the technique of intrathecal placement of a lumbar drain in a porcine ischemic model, which helps in draining the cerebrospinal fluid to a drainage system. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure is monitored by the drainage system, and fluid is drained to maintain a constant cerebrospinal fluid pressure.
