Seawater Circulation

Seawater circulation is the movement of ocean water through interconnected surface and deep-water currents, a process that redistributes heat, dissolved gases, nutrients, and organisms across marine environments. It is driven by wind, Earth’s rotation, tides, and density differences produced by variations in temperature and salinity; sinking of cold, salty water and upwelling of deeper water help sustain large-scale overturning circulation. In bioengineering, understanding and controlling these flows supports the design of aquaculture systems, marine bioreactors, and engineered habitats by regulating oxygen delivery, nutrient transport, mixing, and waste removal. Circulation models also help assess how biological technologies interact with changing ocean conditions.
