Solution-based Inks

Solution-based inks are printable formulations in which polymers, biomolecules, or other solutes dissolve in a liquid carrier to create patterned materials. In extrusion-based bioprinting, the solution is driven through a nozzle and deposited layer by layer; solvent removal through evaporation or diffusion then concentrates the solute and stabilizes the structure. These inks can support the fabrication of scaffolds, microfluidic features, drug-delivery systems, and cell-laden constructs when their viscosity, gelation behavior, and composition are matched to the printing process and biological environment. Their tunability links material chemistry with print fidelity, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility, making them useful for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research.

Analysis of rodent cerebrovascular anatomy plays an important role in experimental stroke research. In this context, intravascular perfusion with colored latex has been considered as a standard tool for several years. However, this technique implies distinct technical limitations, which undermine its reproducibility. Here, we describe a simple method to visualize cerebral vessels in a reproducible manner. Injection of a mixture of two commercially available carbon black inks through the left...

Formulation of stable, functional inks is critical to expanding the applications of additive manufacturing. In turn, knowledge of the mechanisms of dispersant/particle bonding is required for effective ink formulation. Diffuse Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) is presented as a simple, inexpensive way to gain insight into these mechanisms.
