Anesthetized Animal Sampling

Anesthetized animal sampling is the collection of blood, tissue, fluid, or other biological specimens from an animal under controlled anesthesia, enabling research while limiting movement and perceived discomfort. Anesthetic agents reduce consciousness and reflex activity, allowing trained personnel to obtain samples under defined conditions while monitoring respiration, circulation, body temperature, and depth of anesthesia. In biology, this approach supports studies of physiology, pharmacology, metabolism, disease progression, and treatment responses. Standardized sampling procedures can improve data quality by reducing stress-related changes and help researchers collect repeated or precisely timed measurements when approved by institutional animal-care and ethical guidelines.

We have developed an effective methodology for sampling and analysis of odor signals in order to understand how they may be used in animal communication. Particularly, we use headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze the volatile components of animal odors and scent-markings.

Inhalational Anesthetics: Overview

2024

Inhalation anesthetics are drugs that induce general anesthesia upon inhalation. They work by increasing the sensitivity of GABAA receptors or inhibiting NMDA receptors, leading to a decrease in central nervous system activity. The depth of anesthesia can be rapidly adjusted by changing the concentration of the inhaled gas. Some common examples of inhalational anesthetics include volatile liquids like isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane and gases like xenon and nitrous oxide. Isoflurane, a...
