Antigen Presentation

Antigen presentation is the process by which cells display peptide fragments on their surface for recognition by T lymphocytes, enabling the immune system to distinguish potential threats from normal tissue. Intracellular proteins are degraded and loaded onto major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, while extracellular proteins are processed in endosomal compartments and presented by MHC class II molecules. T-cell receptors recognize these peptide-MHC complexes, initiating immune responses such as cytotoxic activity or helper-cell signaling. Understanding antigen presentation is central to studying infection, autoimmunity, vaccination, transplantation, and cancer immunology, and supports the development of immunotherapies and diagnostic approaches.

Assessing Impaired MHC-I Antigen Presentation in Immune Cells Infected with Bacteria

2026

Start with an immune cell culture infected with pathogenic bacteria that form intracellular inclusion bodies. The bacterial infection impairs the antigen presentation pathway in the immune cells.Take an uninfected culture as a control.Next, add a model protein antigen and incubate.Immune cells internalize, process, and present the model antigen-derived peptides on MHC-I molecules. After incubation, wash the cells to remove any unprocessed antigen.Fix the cells, then add a quenching agent to...

Development of an Antigen-driven Colitis Model to Study Presentation of Antigens by Antigen Presenting Cells to T Cells

In this antigen-driven colitis model, OT-II CD4+ T cells expressing a red fluorescent protein were adoptively transferred into RAG-/- mice that express a green fluorescent protein in mononuclear phagocytes (MPs). The hosts were challenged with Escherichia coli (E.coli) expressing the ovalbumin protein (OVA) fused to a cyan fluorescent protein (CFP).

Natural Killer T cells (NKT) are critical determinants of the immune response to cancer, regulation of autioimmunity, clearance of infection, and the development of artheriosclerotic plaques. In this interview, Mitch Kronenberg discusses his laboratory's efforts to understand the mechanism through which NKT cells are activated by glycolipid antigens.

Self-presentation is a fundamental aspect of social interaction, shaping both how others perceive individuals and how they view themselves. This dynamic process influences behaviors in various social settings, often leading people to adjust their appearance, speech, and demeanor to align with their desired identity. While self-presentation can be deliberate or unconscious, it plays a critical role in interpersonal relationships and self-perception.Forms of Self-PresentationSelf-presentation can...
