Antimicrobial Compounds

Antimicrobial compounds are substances that inhibit or destroy microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, making them essential to biology, medicine, and public health. They act through mechanisms such as disrupting cell walls or membranes, blocking protein or nucleic acid synthesis, or interfering with essential metabolic pathways; their effects may be microbicidal or growth-inhibiting. Researchers study these compounds to understand microbial physiology, develop treatments for infectious diseases, and evaluate antimicrobial resistance. Their applications include antibiotics, antifungals, disinfectants, and laboratory tools, while ongoing research seeks selective, effective compounds that limit toxicity and slow the spread of resistant organisms.

Methods are described for thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) separation of plant extracts and contact bioautography to identify antibacterial metabolites. The methods are applied to the screening of red clover phenolic compounds inhibiting hyper ammonia-producing bacteria (HAB) native to the bovine rumen.

Synergistic Antimicrobial Effect of Membrane-Targeting Compounds on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

Take suspensions of an antibiotic-resistant strain of a pathogenic bacterium.Treat one suspension with a short, membrane-disrupting antibiotic compound and the other with both the short compound and a longer, membrane-intercalating compound.Incubate both suspensions with agitation. These compounds mimic the lipid bilayer structure, enabling their spontaneous insertion into bacterial membranes. The short compound spans only part of the membrane’s thickness, creating a structural mismatch. Production and Testing of Antimicrobial Peptides and Their Mimics

2026

This protocol describes a method for producing and evaluating the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity of the cationic peptide Mel4 and peptide mimic RK758. By integrating chemical synthesis, recombinant expression, and standardized functional assays, it provides a streamlined workflow for the production and testing of peptides and small-molecule mimics.
