Arabidopsis Tomato

Arabidopsis and tomato are widely used plant research systems that help scientists investigate how genes, cells, and environmental conditions shape plant growth and development. Arabidopsis provides a compact, experimentally tractable model, while tomato offers a complementary system for studying crop-relevant traits; researchers compare their genomes, gene expression, signaling pathways, and developmental processes to connect molecular mechanisms with visible characteristics. Together, these plants support research in genetics, physiology, plant-microbe interactions, and responses to stress. Findings from Arabidopsis can guide hypotheses in tomato, while tomato studies help translate basic biological insights toward crop improvement and sustainable agriculture.

The Ice-Cap method allows one to grow plants in 96-well plates and non-destructively harvest root tissue from each seedling. DNA extracted from this root tissue can be used for genotyping reactions. We have found that Ice-Cap works well for Arabidopsis thaliana, tomato, and rice seedlings.

Source: Hassan, J. A., et al. High-Throughput Identification of Resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato in Tomato using Seedling Flood Assay. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates a method to screen for bacterial resistance in different tomato strains using ten-day-old seedlings inoculated with a bacterial suspension. It explains how bacteria invade through stomata, deliver effector proteins to suppress plant immunity, and how plant responses differ between susceptible and resistant...
