Bar Domains

BAR domains are conserved protein modules that sense and shape membrane curvature, making them important regulators of membrane organization and trafficking in cells. Their banana-shaped, dimeric structure binds acidic phospholipids, while membrane-associated amphipathic helices can insert into the lipid bilayer and stabilize or generate curved surfaces. Different groups, including N-BAR, F-BAR, and I-BAR domains, promote distinct curvature geometries and recruit proteins involved in actin assembly, endocytosis, and membrane remodeling. Studying BAR domains helps explain how cells form vesicles, tubules, and protrusions, with broader relevance to intracellular transport, signaling, and diseases linked to abnormal membrane dynamics.

Bar Graph

A bar graph is also called a bar chart and consists of bars that are separated from each other. It either uses horizontal or vertical bars to show comparisons among categories. The bars can be rectangles, or they can be rectangular boxes (used in three-dimensional plots). One axis of the graph represents the specific categories being compared, and the other axis shows a discrete value. In this graph, the length of the bar for each category is proportional to the number or percent of individuals...

Blast Quantification Using Hopkinson Pressure Bars

This protocol details the use of Hopkinson pressure bars to measure reflected blast loading from near-field explosive events. It is capable of interpolating a pressure-time history at any point on a reflective boundary and as such can be used to fully characterize the spatial and temporal variations in loading produced.

Multiple Bar Graph

As the name suggests, a multiple bar graph is the same as a bar graph but has multiple bars to depict relationships between different data values. One can include as many parameters as possible. However, each parameter must have the same unit of measurement. Each bar or column in the multiple bar graph represents a data value. These graphs are used primarily in interrelating two or more sets of data. The categories of different kinds of data are listed along the horizontal or x-axis, whereas...

Conservation of Protein Domains Over Different Proteins

2020

Protein domains are small structurally independent units that are part of a single amino acid chain. Although these domains are often structurally independent, they may rely on synergistic effects to perform their functions as part of a larger protein. Protein domains may be conserved within the same organism, as well as across different organisms. A limited set of protein domains often duplicate and recombine during evolution. These domains can be organized in different combinations to form...

Three-Domain System of Life

Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequence analysis revealed three distinct groups of cells: eukaryotes, bacteria, and archaea. In 1978, Carl R. Woese proposed the concept of domains, a taxonomic level above kingdoms, to differentiate these groups. He suggested that archaea and bacteria, despite their similar appearance, represent separate domains. Domains differ in rRNA, membrane lipid structure, transfer RNA, and antibiotic sensitivity. In this classification, animals, plants, and fungi belong to the...
