Basic Electrical Rhythm

Basic electrical rhythm is the recurring pattern of electrical slow waves that coordinates rhythmic activity in biological tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. In the gut, interstitial cells of Cajal generate these oscillations through periodic changes in membrane potential, establishing the timing and maximum frequency of smooth muscle contractions; contractions occur when slow waves reach threshold and trigger action potentials. Studying this rhythm helps explain how electrical activity regulates motility, including the coordinated movement of food through the digestive system. Abnormal basic electrical rhythms can contribute to disordered gastrointestinal movement, making the concept important in physiology and research on digestive diseases.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Electric machines and power electronics experiments involve electrical currents, voltages, power, and energy quantities that should be handled with extreme diligence and care. These may include three-phase AC voltage (208 V, 230 V, or 480 V), up to 250 V DC voltages, and currents that can reach 10 A. Electrocution occurs when an electrical path is established through the body with very low currents...

Basic Mouse Care and Maintenance

2023

Mice (Mus musculus) are small rodents that breed and sexually mature quickly, making them perfectly suited to generating large animal colonies for biological research. As compared to other mammalian species, mice are simple and inexpensive to maintain in the laboratory. Nevertheless, mouse colonies do have specific husbandry needs that are critical to preserving animal health and safety as well as experimental reproducibility. This video demonstrates standard practices that ensure mice are...

Circadian rhythms in voluntary wheel-running activity in mammals are tightly coupled to the molecular oscillations of a master clock in the brain. As such, these daily rhythms in behavior can be used to study the influence of genetic, pharmacological, and environmental factors on the functioning of this circadian clock.
