Swallowing Process

The swallowing process is a coordinated biological sequence that moves food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach while protecting the airway. It begins with voluntary movement of a prepared bolus into the pharynx, followed by an involuntary reflex in which muscles contract in sequence, the laryngeal opening closes, and the upper esophageal sphincter relaxes. Peristaltic waves then propel the bolus through the esophagus to the stomach. Understanding these oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases supports the study of nervous system control, muscle coordination, and respiratory protection, and helps explain swallowing disorders such as dysphagia.

2014

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

2025

The Barium Swallow Study, or a Barium Esophagogram, is a diagnostic imaging method used to visualize the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It employs barium sulfate, a radiopaque contrast material, to provide clear images of the upper digestive system, helping to identify abnormalities, diseases, or structural issues. Purpose and Procedure Patients undergoing this procedure ingest a liquid containing barium sulfate with a chalky...

Effective self-presentation is a central component of social interaction and identity construction. It relies on the dynamic processes of defining the situation and engaging in self-disclosure. These mechanisms help individuals navigate social context expectations and manage how others perceive them, fostering mutual understanding and relationship development.Defining the SituationSocial situations are shaped by collectively understood frames—a set of widely understood rules or conventions...
