Behavioral Analysis

Behavioral analysis is the systematic study of how organisms act and respond to internal states, environmental conditions, and interactions with other organisms, making it important for linking observable behavior to biological function. Researchers typically operationalize behaviors, record them with standardized observations or ethograms, and compare frequencies, durations, or sequences under controlled or natural conditions; statistical analysis then tests how variables such as stimuli, social context, or resource availability shape responses. In biology, these methods support studies of communication, learning, foraging, reproduction, welfare, and evolution. Behavioral data can also reveal effects of genes, physiology, or environmental change on organismal fitness and population dynamics.

2017

The island assay is a relatively new, cost-effective assay that can be used to evaluate the basic locomotor behavior of Drosophila melanogaster. This manuscript describes algorithms for automatic data processing and objective quantification of island assay data, making this assay a sensitive, high-throughput readout for large genetic or pharmacological screens.

This manuscript describes a protocol that applies comprehensive profiling for analysis of transcriptional programs induced in specific brain nuclei of rodents following behavioral paradigms. Herein, this approach is illustrated in the context of profiling genes induced in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of mice following acute cocaine exposure, utilizing microfluidic qPCR arrays.

Design and Analysis of Temperature Preference Behavior and its Circadian Rhythm in Drosophila

We recently identified a novel Drosophila circadian output, temperature preference rhythm (TPR), in which the preferred temperature in flies rises during the day and falls during the night. TPR is regulated independently from another circadian output, locomotor activity. Here we describe the design and analysis of TPR in Drosophila.
