Blood Volume

Blood volume is the total amount of blood circulating within the cardiovascular system, a key determinant of tissue perfusion, blood pressure, and oxygen delivery. It includes plasma and formed elements, and the body regulates it through coordinated control of water and electrolyte balance by the kidneys, along with hormonal signals such as antidiuretic hormone and aldosterone; blood loss, dehydration, or fluid shifts can disrupt this balance. Measuring blood volume helps assess circulatory status, anemia, shock, and fluid disorders in biology and medicine. Understanding its regulation also supports research on exercise physiology, cardiovascular function, and responses to injury or disease.

Measuring Cerebral Blood Volume in the Auditory Cortex Using Vascular Space Occupancy

2025

Position a human participant’s head within the head coil of a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, system.Employ vascular space occupancy or VASO, a technique to measure changes in cerebral blood volume, or CBV, the blood volume within the brain.Begin by applying an inversion recovery pulse to suppress signals from blood, allowing only signals from the surrounding tissue within the region to be detected.Next, use MRI-compatible earbuds to deliver auditory stimuli. The stimuli reach...

The CODA 8-Channel High Throughput Non-Invasive Blood Pressure system measures the blood pressure in up to 8 mice or rats simultaneously. This tail-cuff system uses Volume Pressure Recording (VPR) to measure the blood pressure by determining the tail blood volume.

Constant Volume Calorimetry

2020

Calorimeters are useful to determine the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Coffee cup calorimeters are designed to operate at constant (atmospheric) pressure and are convenient to measure heat flow (or enthalpy change) accompanying processes that occur in solution at constant pressure. A different type of calorimeter that operates at constant volume, colloquially known as a bomb calorimeter, is used to measure the energy produced by reactions that yield large amounts of heat and...

Density and Volume

Density and VolumeDensity and volume are important properties that help us understand the nature of matter. Volume measures the amount of space an object occupies, while density describes how much mass is in a given volume. These concepts explain why some objects float while others sink and how different materials behave in various environments.Science and Engineering Practices (SEP): Developing and Using ModelsYou can explore density and volume by creating models that demonstrate these...
