Bradysia Coprophila

Bradysia coprophila, formerly known as Sciara coprophila, is a fungus gnat species used as a model for studying chromosome inheritance, sex determination, and genome organization. During early embryogenesis, its cells undergo programmed chromosome elimination, including the selective loss of paternal X chromosomes in developing males, producing distinct chromosome complements in somatic and germline tissues. This unusual, non-Mendelian inheritance system allows researchers to investigate chromosome imprinting, germline-limited chromosomes, and the cellular control of genome transmission. Work with B. coprophila has helped clarify how chromosome behavior can influence development and provides broader insight into genome stability and epigenetic regulation.
