Cage Changing

Cage changing is the routine replacement of soiled housing materials and maintenance of animal enclosures to support cleanliness, welfare, and reliable biological research. During the process, animals are transferred to a clean cage while used bedding, waste, and contaminated materials are removed; fresh bedding and sanitized equipment help control moisture, odors, ammonia, and potential pathogen exposure. In laboratory biology, consistent cage-changing practices help maintain stable environmental conditions, reduce stress and disease risk, and improve the reproducibility of behavioral, physiological, and biomedical studies. Appropriate frequency and technique also promote humane animal care while supporting valid experimental outcomes.

Melting Land and Sea Ice ExpandNOTE: This activity is a simulation of land- and sea-ice melting and their effects on water levels. First, label one graduated cylinder as 'Sea Ice' and the other graduated cylinder as 'Land Ice.' Hypotheses: the experimental hypothesis might be that the land ice melting will cause the water level to rise more than the melting sea ice. The null hypothesis would be that there will be no difference in the change in water level between the two containers. Add 10 ice...

Climate Change - Concepts

The certainty of climate change remains a public controversy despite the consensus among approximately 97% of active climate researchers, who not only agree that the Earth’s climate is changing but also state that this change is intensified by human activity, predominantly carbon emissions 1. The disconnect between the public and the experts is partly due to poor understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate change as well as the differences among essential concepts such as weather and...

The Thoracic Cage: Sternum

2023

The thoracic or rib cage forms the body's thorax (chest) portion. Its primary function in the body is to protect vital organs in the thoracic cavity, such as the heart and the lungs. It consists of 12 pairs of ribs with their costal cartilages and the sternum. The ribs are anchored posteriorly to the 12 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T12). The sternum is the elongated bony structure on the anterior side of the thoracic cage. It consists of three parts: the manubrium, the body, and the xiphoid process.
