Cardiac Puncture Technique

Cardiac puncture technique is a method for collecting blood by inserting a needle directly into a cardiac chamber, making it useful when researchers need a relatively large sample from a small laboratory animal. After appropriate anesthesia and positioning, the needle enters the ventricle or atrium, and gentle syringe aspiration draws blood through the needle while minimizing tissue disruption. The collected blood can support hematology, serum or plasma analysis, immunology, and biochemical studies. Because the procedure is generally terminal, it requires careful training, institutional approval, and adherence to animal-welfare protocols, making standardized technique essential for reliable samples and ethical biological research.
