Cellular Waste Processing

Cellular waste processing is the set of biological mechanisms that identify, break down, recycle, or remove damaged molecules and cellular components, preserving homeostasis and cell function. Cells route unwanted proteins to the ubiquitin-proteasome system, while autophagy encloses damaged organelles or bulk cytoplasm in autophagosomes that fuse with lysosomes, where hydrolytic enzymes digest their contents into reusable building blocks; other wastes can leave through membrane transport or exocytosis. In biology, these pathways support energy balance, stress responses, and cellular quality control, while their failure can cause protein accumulation, organelle dysfunction, aging, and disease, making them important targets for research and therapy.

Proper Waste Disposal

2023

Robert M. Rioux and Taslima A. Zaman, Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, PA Users are responsible for the proper disposal of the waste generated during their work. Improper waste disposal may severely endanger public health and/or the environment. The handling of hazardous waste must be regulated from the moment of generation until its disposal at its offsite final destination facility. A waste management system must be devised before work begins on any laboratory activity. Users...

Cellular Impedance-Based Analysis for Monitoring of Cellular Processes in Real-Time

2025

In this video, we demonstrate the process of real-time monitoring of cellular events, including the proliferation of adherent cells, via a cellular impedance assay. Here, the adherent cells act as insulators, restricting the current flow between the electrodes and increasing the impedance.

Scalable Step-by-Step Approach of Sustainable Bioplastic Production from Food Waste

2025

This protocol presents a scalable method for converting food waste into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics. It utilizes arrested anaerobic digestion for food waste pretreatment, halophilic microbial fermentation for PHA biosynthesis, and a chemical-free downstream process for PHA recovery.

Autotrophs and Heterotrophs Living organisms require a continuous input of energy to maintain cellular and organismal functions such as growth, repair, movement, defense, and reproduction. Cells can only use chemical energy to fuel their functions, therefore they need to harvest energy from chemical bonds of biomolecules, such as sugars and lipids. Autotrophic organisms, namely plants, algae, and photosynthetic and chemosynthetic bacteria, convert inorganic materials into such biomolecules by...
