Central Complex

The central complex is a conserved set of interconnected brain regions in arthropods, especially insects, that integrates sensory information to guide orientation, navigation, and behavior. Visual, olfactory, and other sensory signals converge in its neuropils, where recurrent neural circuits can represent heading, movement goals, and environmental context before influencing motor-control pathways. Research on the central complex helps explain how animals select actions, maintain directional memories, and navigate using landmarks or internal compass cues. Because its organized circuitry is experimentally accessible, this system also provides a model for studying neural computation, behavioral flexibility, and the evolution of brain mechanisms that link perception to action.

The Central Dogma

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...

Formation of Complex Ions

A type of Lewis acid-base chemistry involves the formation of a complex ion (or a coordination complex) comprising a central atom, typically a transition metal cation, surrounded by ions or molecules called ligands. These ligands can be neutral molecules like H2O or NH3, or ions such as CN− or OH−. Often, the ligands act as Lewis bases, donating a pair of electrons to the central atom. These types of Lewis acid-base reactions are examples of a broad subdiscipline called coordination...

The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians, "average" is commonly accepted for "arithmetic mean." Another measure of...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neal Abrams — SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry Transition metals are found everywhere from vitamin supplements to electroplating baths. Transition metals also make up the pigments in many paints and compose all minerals. Typically, transition metals are found in the cationic form since they readily oxidize, or lose electrons, and are surrounded by electron donors called ligands. These ligands do not form ionic or covalent bonds with the metal center,...

The central bank is responsible for conducting monetary policy in a country. Although central banks share similar responsibilities across countries, their organizational structures can vary.In the United States, the Federal Reserve System, known as the Federal Reserve or simply the Fed, is the central bank. The Federal Reserve is composed of three core components. The first component is the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, a government body located in Washington, D.C. It consists of seven...
