Cerebral Spinal Fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), also called cerebral spinal fluid, is a clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, protecting the central nervous system and supporting its stable chemical environment. The choroid plexus produces CSF within the brain’s ventricles, where it circulates through connected chambers and the subarachnoid space before being reabsorbed into venous blood through arachnoid granulations. Its buoyancy, cushioning, and waste-transport functions help maintain neural health. In biology and medicine, researchers analyze CSF obtained by lumbar puncture to investigate infections, bleeding, inflammation, tumors, and other neurological disorders, making it valuable for diagnosis and research.

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations of Blood Flow in a Cerebral Aneurysm

2023

Source: Joseph C. Muskat, Vitaliy L. Rayz, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana The objective of this video is to describe recent advancements of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations based on patient- or animal-specific vasculature. Here, subject-based vessel segmentations were created, and, using a combination of open-source and commercial tools, a high-resolution numerical solution was determined within a flow model.

The ventricular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bathes the neuroepithelial and cerebral cortical progenitor cells during early brain development in the embryo. Here we describe the method developed to isolate ventricular CSF from rodent embryos of different ages in order to investigate its biological function. In addition, we demonstrate our cerebral cortical explant dissection and culture technique that allows for explant growth with minimal volumes of culture medium or CSF.

Ex Vivo Culture of Circulating Tumor Cells in the Cerebral Spinal Fluid from Melanoma Patients to Study Melanoma-Associated Leptomeningeal Disease

2024

This article describes a protocol for the propagation of cerebral spinal fluid-circulating tumor cells (CSF-CTCs) collected from patients with melanoma-associated leptomeningeal disease (M-LMD) to develop preclinical models to study M-LMD.

Use of Cerebral Open-Flow Microperfusion for the Longitudinal Collection of Interstitial Fluid in an Animal Model of Glioblastoma

2025

In vivo, intercellular communications underpinning many central nervous system diseases, such as glioblastoma (GBM), are notoriously difficult to measure and characterize. Here, we describe procedures of cerebral open-flow microperfusion (cOFM) that can be employed to sample interstitial fluid components in a longitudinal animal model of GBM.

A Low Mortality Rat Model to Assess Delayed Cerebral Vasospasm After Experimental Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is bleeding that occurs into the subarachnoid space when an aneurysm ruptures. While the morbidity and mortality from this event has been on a decline due to improved treatment approaches, the risk of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage continues to be the same as it was several years ago. The importance of establishing a comprehensive and reproducible animal model to identify initiating events of cerebral vasospasm has been the focus of research...
