Cocci Bacilli

Coccobacilli are bacteria with short, plump rod-shaped cells that appear intermediate between spherical cocci and elongated bacilli, making cell morphology an important clue in microbial identification. Under light microscopy, cell dimensions and division patterns determine whether cells appear singly, in pairs, or in clusters, while Gram staining reveals differences in cell-envelope structure that help characterize them. Recognizing coccobacillary morphology supports preliminary identification in clinical specimens and environmental samples, but culture characteristics, biochemical tests, and molecular methods are often needed to distinguish related organisms and guide further biological or medical investigation.

Microbial and Fungal Diversity - Concepts

2019

Bacteria and fungi are two highly diverse groups of organisms that can have significant beneficial or detrimental impacts on human health. For this reason, it is important to understand and distinguish between individual species of these groups. As you will recall, biological taxonomists group organisms based on their phylogenetic relatedness. The three domains of life, Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukaryota segregate life into three distinct groupings. While all bacteria fall within the domain...

Visualizing Soil Microorganisms via the Contact Slide Assay and Microscopy

The abiotic portion includes inorganic particles ranging in size and shape that determine the soil’s texture. The biotic portion incorporates plant residues, roots, organic matter, and microorganisms. Soil microbe abundance and diversity is expansive, as...

An Opsono-Adherence Assay for Assessing the Opsonization of Encapsulated Bacteria by Anti-Capsule Antibodies

2025

This video demonstrates an opsono-adherence assay for examining the interaction between opsonized bacteria and immune cells. Fluorescently labeled bacteria, treated with test serum containing anti-capsule antibodies, are incubated with macrophages. After staining the macrophages with fluorescence, the attached bacteria on the macrophage surface are observed under a microscope for visualization.

Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging for Rapid III-V Heteroepitaxial Characterization

The use of electron channeling contrast imaging in a scanning electron microscope to characterize defects in III-V/Si heteroexpitaxial thin films is described. This method yields similar results to plan-view transmission electron microscopy, but in significantly less time due to lack of required sample preparation.
