Combination Therapy

Combination therapy is the use of two or more therapeutic agents or interventions to treat a disease, often improving outcomes compared with a single treatment. In biology and medicine, the combined treatments may act on different molecular targets, biological pathways, or stages of disease, producing additive or synergistic effects while limiting the emergence of treatment resistance. Researchers apply combination therapy in areas such as cancer, infectious disease, and chronic disorders, where complex disease mechanisms can reduce the effectiveness of individual treatments. Studying dose, timing, interactions, and toxicity helps identify effective regimens and supports more precise, durable therapies.

Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment. The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

A novel methodology that is employed for the treatment of recurrent glioblastomas is described. This treatment approach employs the application of alternating electric tumor treating fields (TTFields), known as TTF Therapy in combination with bevacizumab, a targeted agent that is currently FDA approved as monotherapy.

Oral Combinational Antiretroviral Therapy to Treat HIV-1 Infection in a Humanized Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to evaluate the effectiveness of oral combined antiretroviral therapy (oral cART) in a human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1)-infected humanized mouse model. A combination of drugs targeting HIV-1, including nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and integrase strand transfer inhibitors, is administered along with a nutritional supplement and antibiotics. Following the consumption of this mixture by the humanized mice infected with HIV-1, the effective...
