Precision Medicine

Precision medicine is an approach to disease prevention and treatment that uses differences among individuals to guide healthcare decisions rather than applying the same strategy to everyone. It integrates biological information, such as genetic variation and molecular features, with clinical, environmental, and lifestyle data to identify disease subtypes, predict responses, and select interventions for particular patient groups. In biology, precision medicine links molecular mechanisms to observable health outcomes, supporting targeted therapies, earlier risk assessment, and more informative clinical research. Its application can improve treatment selection, reduce ineffective interventions, and advance the development of therapies designed for biologically defined populations.

Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) are a powerful tool in translational cancer research, reflecting both the genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of the disease and response to personalized anti-cancer therapies. Here, a consolidated protocol to generate human primary bladder cancer PDOs in preparation for the evaluation of phenotypic analyses and drug responses is detailed.

Primary Human Nasal Epithelial Cells: Biobanking in the Context of Precision Medicine

Here we describe the isolation, amplification, and differentiation of primary human nasal epithelial (HNE) cells at the air-liquid interface and a biobanking protocol allowing to successfully freeze and then thaw amplified HNE. The protocol analyzes electrophysiological properties of differentiated HNE cells and CFTR-related chloride secretion correction upon different modulator treatments.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Accuracy and Precision

2020

Scientists typically make repeated measurements of a quantity to ensure the quality of their findings and to evaluate both the precision and the accuracy of their results. Measurements are said to be precise if they yield very similar results when repeated in the same manner. A measurement is considered accurate if it yields a result that is very close to the true or the accepted value. Precise values agree with each other; accurate values agree with a true value. Suppose a quality control...
