Commercial Gel Extraction Kits

Commercial gel extraction kits are laboratory products used to recover specific DNA fragments from agarose or polyacrylamide gels, enabling researchers to purify selected nucleic acids for further analysis. In a typical workflow, the excised gel slice dissolves in a chaotropic buffer, allowing DNA to bind to a silica membrane; washing removes salts and contaminants, and a low-salt buffer or water elutes the purified fragment. These kits support molecular biology applications such as cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR product preparation, and restriction-fragment analysis. Their standardized format improves recovery, reduces handling time, and helps produce DNA suitable for downstream experiments.

Our protocol demonstrates how to pour multiple protein gels at a time by recycling Invitrogen Nupage Novex minigel cassettes, and inexpensive materials purchased at a home improvement store. This economical and streamlined method includes a way to store the gels at 4°C for a few weeks. By re-using the plastic gel cassettes from commercially available gels, labs that run frequent protein gels can save significant costs and help the environment.

We are describing a new method of isolating genomic DNA from whole blood collected for plasma/serology. After plasma collection, the compacted blood is usually discarded. Our novel method represents a significant improvement over existing methods and makes DNA and plasma available from a single collection, without requesting additional blood.

Microbial DNA Analysis in the Field Using a Biological Extraction Field Kit and a Field qPCR Unit

2026

Reliable and accurate forms of field-deployable DNA analysis are crucial for many industries. This paper offers two methods for environmental microbial analysis in the field: 1) the isolation of microbial DNA from environmental samples using a biological extraction field kit, and 2) the analysis of DNA via the field qPCR unit.
