Density Surface Mapping

Density Surface Mapping is a spatial analysis method that represents how the concentration of biological objects or events varies across a defined area. It converts discrete observations, such as cell locations, organism records, or molecular signals, into a continuous surface by estimating local density across neighboring regions, often with a smoothing function that controls spatial detail. High-density areas can reveal cellular clustering, population hotspots, tissue organization, or changes in biological distributions. In biology, the method supports visualization and quantitative comparison of spatial patterns, helping researchers relate location and abundance to development, disease, habitat structure, or environmental conditions.

2012

We present a unique platform for characterizing electrode surfaces in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) that allows simultaneous performance of multiple characterization techniques (e.g. in situ Raman spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy alongside electrochemical measurements). Complementary information from these analyses may help to advance toward a more profound understanding of electrode reaction and degradation mechanisms, providing insights into rational design of better materials for...

Mapping Absolute DNA Density in Cell Nuclei using Single-molecule Localization Microscopy

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California One principle of brain organization is the topographic mapping of information. Especially in sensory and motor cortices, adjacent regions of the brain tend to represent information from adjacent parts of the body, resulting in maps of the body expressed on the surface of the brain. The primary sensory and motor maps in the brain surround a prominent sulcus known as the central sulcus. The cortex...

Surface Renewal: An Advanced Micrometeorological Method for Measuring and Processing Field-Scale Energy Flux Density Data

2013

Surface renewal is a micrometeorological method that is being used increasingly to determine energy fluxes, but its technical complexity makes it inaccessible to a broad audience. We describe the steps needed to set up and calibrate a surface renewal field station, to acquire and process data, and to correctly interpret results.
