Differentiation Removal

Differentiation removal, commonly called dedifferentiation, is the process by which a specialized cell loses some of its mature characteristics and returns to a less specialized state. It occurs through changes in gene expression that reduce the activity of cell-type-specific programs and can restore the capacity for proliferation or developmental change. In biology, this process helps explain regeneration, tissue remodeling, and the formation of progenitor-like cells after injury. Understanding differentiation removal also informs research on cellular reprogramming, stem cell biology, and regenerative medicine, where controlled changes in cell identity may support tissue repair and disease modeling.

Rotary Evaporation to Remove Solvent

2023

Source: Dr. Melanie Pribisko Yen and Grace Tang — California Institute of Technology Rotary evaporation is a technique most commonly used in organic chemistry to remove a solvent from a higher-boiling point compound of interest. The rotary evaporator, or "rotovap", was invented in 1950 by the chemist Lyman C. Craig. The primary use of a rotovap is to dry and purify samples for downstream applications. Its speed and ability to handle large volumes of solvent make rotary evaporation a preferred...

Differentiating Immortalized Multipotent Otic Progenitors into Spiral Ganglion Neurons and Evaluating the Differentiation

2025

The video demonstrates the differentiation of immortalized multipotent otic progenitors (iMOPs) into spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and immunofluorescence-based confirmation of the differentiation. The iMOPs are plated onto culture substrate-coated coverslips in a neuronal differentiation medium for differentiation into SGNs. The differentiated cells are labeled with antibodies specific for neuronal differentiation markers and analyzed under a microscope to confirm differentiation.

Differential Scanning Calorimetry

Source: Danielle N. Beatty and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is an important measurement to characterize thermal properties of materials. DSC is used primarily to calculate the amount of heat stored in a material as it heats up (heat capacity) as well as the heat absorbed or released during chemical reactions or phase changes. However, measurement of this heat can also lead to...

Extracorporeal Removal of Drugs: Hemoperfusion and Hemofiltration

Hemoperfusion and hemofiltration are critical techniques in medical treatments to eliminate accumulated drugs, metabolites, and electrolytes from the bloodstream. These methods are particularly vital in cases of accidental poisoning and drug overdose.Hemoperfusion involves passing blood through an adsorbent material to remove unwanted substances. The main adsorbents used in hemoperfusion include activated charcoal and Amberlite resins. Activated charcoal can adsorb both polar and nonpolar...
