Doxorubicin Cardiotoxicity

Doxorubicin cardiotoxicity is heart muscle injury caused by the anthracycline chemotherapy drug doxorubicin, and it is an important concern because damage can develop during treatment or appear years later. Doxorubicin can promote oxidative stress, disrupt mitochondrial function, and interfere with topoisomerase IIβ in cardiomyocytes, leading to impaired contractility and, in severe cases, heart failure. In biology and cancer research, studying this toxicity helps clarify how anticancer drugs affect normal tissues. Cardiac imaging, biomarker measurement, dose management, and protective strategies support early detection and risk reduction while preserving doxorubicin’s antitumor benefit.
