Element Naming

Element naming is the process of assigning standardized names and chemical symbols to the elements that make up matter, providing a shared language for science. Names may reflect an element’s properties, source, geographic location, mythology, or a scientist, while the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry evaluates and approves proposed names and symbols. In biology, consistent element naming supports accurate descriptions of essential nutrients, trace elements, toxins, and the atoms found in biomolecules. It also helps researchers interpret chemical formulas, compare experimental findings, and communicate clearly across disciplines, from molecular biology and physiology to environmental and biomedical research.

Naming Enantiomers

2023

The naming of enantiomers employs the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog rules that involve assigning priorities to different substituent groups at a chiral center. Each enantiomer, being a distinct molecule, is assigned a unique name by the Cahn–Ingold–Prelog (CIP) rules, also called the R–S system. The prefix R- or S- attached to the chiral centers in an enantiomer is dependent on the spatial arrangement of the four substituents on the chiral center. The R–S system essentially comprises three steps:...

Naming Skeletal Muscles

2024

The naming of the approximately 700 muscles in the human body is based on a set of criteria designed to provide descriptive information about each muscle, making it easier to identify and remember them. The key factors used in naming muscles include: Region of the Body: Certain muscles in the body are classified based on their location or association with a specific area. For example, the temporalis muscle is in the head region, whereas the brachialis is in the arm. Position and Depth:...

Comparing the Frequency Effect Between the Lexical Decision and Naming Tasks in Chinese

2016

Researchers adopt both the lexical decision task and the naming task to investigate some important topics such as character/word recognition by comparing the frequency effect between these two tasks. This article introduces this approach through two exemplar experiments and elaborates on the underlying logic.

Periodic Classification of the Elements

The periodic table arranges atoms based on increasing atomic number so that elements with the same chemical properties recur periodically. When their electron configurations are added to the table, a periodic recurrence of similar electron configurations in the outer shells of these elements is observed. Because they are in the outer shells of an atom, valence electrons play the most important role in chemical reactions. The outer electrons have the highest energy of the electrons in an atom...

Classification of Elements and Compounds

Pure substances consist of only one type of matter. A pure substance can be an element or a compound. An element consists of only one type of atom, while a compound consists of two or more types of atoms held together by a chemical bond. Elements are classified as atomic or molecular based on the nature of their basic units. Compounds are pure substances composed of two or more elements in fixed, definite proportions. Compounds are classified as ionic or molecular (covalent) based on the bonds...
