Embryo Quality Assessment

Embryo quality assessment is the systematic evaluation of an embryo’s developmental potential using observable biological features, helping researchers and clinicians characterize early development. Assessment commonly examines morphology, including cell number, size and symmetry, degree of fragmentation, and progression through cleavage and blastocyst stages, often through microscopic observation over time. In reproductive biology, these criteria support the selection and comparison of embryos for further study or assisted reproduction, while also providing indicators of developmental competence. Standardized assessment improves consistency across laboratories and contributes to research on fertilization, implantation, embryonic development, and factors that influence early developmental outcomes.

Source: Bernut, A., et al., Deciphering and Imaging Pathogenesis and Cording of Mycobacterium abscessus in Zebrafish Embryos. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates a protocol for isolating and quantifying Mycobacterium abscessus from an infected zebrafish embryo. The procedure involves embryo euthanasia, tissue lysis, and homogenization to release the bacteria, followed by centrifugation and resuspension in a surfactant buffer. Finally, the bacterial suspension is serially diluted, plated...

2023

The present protocol describes a procedure to perform fluorescent size exclusion chromatography (FSEC) on membrane proteins to assess their quality for downstream functional and structural analysis. Representative FSEC results collected for several G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) under detergent-solubilized and detergent-free conditions are presented.
