Enzyme Units Calculation

Enzyme units calculation is the quantitative determination of an enzyme’s catalytic activity, typically expressed in units (U), to compare reaction rates under defined conditions. One enzyme unit commonly represents the amount of enzyme that converts 1 micromole of substrate into product per minute at a specified temperature, pH, and substrate concentration. Calculations use the measured rate of product formation or substrate disappearance, adjusted for reaction volume, sample volume, dilution, and assay time. In biology, enzyme units support purification monitoring, specific activity measurements, kinetic studies, quality control, and comparisons of enzyme performance across experiments.

Calculating Depreciation: Units of Production Method

2024

The units of production method for depreciation bases the depreciation expense on the actual usage or output of the asset rather than its estimated useful life. The method estimates the total number of units an asset will produce over its useful life. Then, the depreciation expense is calculated each year based on how many units were produced that year. For example, suppose Horizon Industries purchases a machine for $100,000, with an expected production capacity of 500,000 units and a scrap...

Biological Catalysts All living organisms continuously perform numerous biochemical reactions to sustain their presence. Most of these reactions require an input of energy to start, which is called the activation energy. Catalysts are chemicals that lower the activation energy. Even though catalysts facilitate a chemical reaction, they are not consumed by it. This means a catalyst can facilitate a specific chemical reaction over and over in succession, increasing the rate of that reaction.

Baseline Peroxidase Enzyme Experiment ExpandTo begin, the baseline for the peroxidase enzyme reaction must be determined. Make the substrate by adding 7 mL of distilled water to a clean test tube and then add 0.2 mL of guaiacol. Note: Guaiacol is a color-changing indicator that becomes more yellow-orange as the enzyme reaction progresses. Next, add 0.3 mL of 0.1% H2O2. Using a marker, label the test tube substrate and then cover the tube with a piece of sealing film. Holding the cover in place,...

Inside living organisms, enzymes act as catalysts for many biochemical reactions involved in cellular metabolism. The role of enzymes is to reduce the activation energies of biochemical reactions by forming complexes with its substrates. The lowering of activation energies favor an increase in the rates of biochemical reactions. Enzyme deficiencies can often translate into life-threatening diseases. For example, a genetic abnormality resulting in the deficiency of the enzyme G6PD...

Restriction Enzyme Digests

Restriction enzymes or endonucleases recognize and cut DNA at a specific sequence. These enzymes occur naturally in bacteria as a defense against bacteriophages - viruses that infect bacteria. Bacterial restriction enzymes cut the invading bacteriophage DNA while leaving the bacterial genomic DNA unharmed due to addition of methyl groups. This video explains the basic principles of restriction enzymes including: how restriction enzymes are named and the types of recognition sites and...
