Eye Swab

An eye swab is a sampling technique that collects material from the ocular surface, usually the conjunctiva, for biological analysis. Using a sterile swab, a clinician gently contacts the conjunctival sac to obtain cells, secretions, or microorganisms while minimizing contamination and discomfort. The sample can undergo microscopy, culture, or molecular testing to identify infectious agents and characterize ocular inflammation. In biology and clinical research, eye swabs support the study of microbial communities, help investigate conjunctivitis and other eye disorders, and provide noninvasive material for pathogen surveillance and diagnostic development.
