Fixation Dehydration

Fixation dehydration is a tissue-processing approach that preserves biological specimens and removes water so they can be examined microscopically. Fixation stabilizes cellular structures by cross-linking or precipitating tissue components, while dehydration typically uses a graded series of alcohol concentrations to replace water gradually and reduce distortion. After dehydration, tissues can undergo clearing and paraffin infiltration for sectioning and staining. In biology, this workflow supports histology, pathology, and research on tissue organization by maintaining structural detail in specimens that would otherwise deteriorate, enabling consistent preparation for light microscopy and other imaging methods.

Dehydration Synthesis

2026

Dehydration synthesis (also called a condensation reaction) is the chemical process in which two molecules covalently link together to form a new molecule, along with the release of a water molecule. Many physiologically important compounds form by dehydration synthesis reactions, such as complex carbohydrates, proteins, DNA, and RNA.Synthesis of carbohydratesSugar molecules are covalently linked together by dehydration synthesis. During the reaction, the hydroxyl (-OH) group from one reactant...

Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) is often required in combination with histopathology and molecular diagnostics for selection of therapy in personalized medicine. A novel non-cross-linking, formalin-free tissue fixative that allows high quality morphologic, molecular and FISH analyses from the same specimen by addition of a post-fixation step before FISH is presented.

Acid-Catalyzed Dehydration of Alcohols to Alkenes

2025

In a dehydration reaction, a hydroxyl group in an alcohol is eliminated along with the hydrogen from an adjacent carbon. Here, the products are an alkene and a molecule of water. Dehydration of alcohols is generally achieved by heating in the presence of an acid catalyst. While the dehydration of primary alcohols requires high temperatures and acid concentrations, secondary and tertiary alcohols can lose a water molecule under relatively mild conditions. The acid-catalyzed dehydration of...

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...
