Gastrointestinal Tract Dissection

Gastrointestinal tract dissection is the systematic examination of the digestive system’s organs and tissues to reveal how their structures support digestion, absorption, and waste elimination. During the procedure, the tract is carefully exposed and traced from the esophagus through the stomach and intestines, while features such as tissue layers, sphincters, blood vessels, and supporting membranes are identified in relation to one another. In biology, this hands-on method connects anatomical organization with physiological function, helping students and researchers understand peristalsis, nutrient absorption, and regional specialization. It also provides a foundation for investigating digestive disorders, comparative anatomy, and the effects of disease or experimental treatments.

Histology of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract

The GI tract, from beginning to end, is made up of four continuous tissue layers that adjust their structure according to their specific roles. These layers, from innermost to outermost, are known as the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, and serosa, which are continuous with the mesentery. The mucosa is sometimes called a mucous membrane due to its mucus-secreting features. This membrane is composed of epithelium, which directly interacts with ingested substances, and the lamina propria, a layer...

2011

A reliable method for the RNA isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa recovered from murine cecums is described. The RNA recovered is of sufficient quantity and quality for subsequent qPCR, transcription profiling, and RNA Seq experiments. This technique can be adapted for RNA isolation of other intestinal microbes.
