Glomerulus

The glomerulus is a specialized network of capillaries within each kidney nephron that filters blood and initiates urine formation. Blood enters under relatively high hydrostatic pressure, driving water and small dissolved substances across the filtration barrier, while endothelial cells, a shared basement membrane, and podocyte slit diaphragms restrict blood cells and most proteins from passing into Bowman’s capsule. The resulting filtrate undergoes selective reabsorption and secretion along the nephron to regulate fluid balance, electrolytes, and waste removal. Studying glomerular structure and function is essential for understanding kidney physiology and disorders such as glomerulonephritis, proteinuria, and chronic kidney disease.
