Glucose Breakdown

Glucose breakdown is the set of metabolic reactions that converts glucose into usable chemical energy, supporting cellular activities across biology. It begins with glycolysis in the cytoplasm, where one glucose molecule is split into two pyruvate molecules and produces ATP and NADH; when oxygen is available, pyruvate enters the mitochondrion for further oxidation through the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Without sufficient oxygen, cells can regenerate NAD+ through fermentation, allowing glycolysis to continue. Studying glucose breakdown explains energy production, respiratory metabolism, exercise physiology, and how cells adapt to changing oxygen and nutrient conditions.

Breakdown of the Phillips Curve (1970s)

2026

During the 1960s, a stable trade-off between the inflation rate and the unemployment rate was observed, as represented by the Phillips curve. According to this relationship, low unemployment was generally associated with high inflation, while high unemployment was associated with low inflation. However, during the 1970s, this relationship broke down.A sharp rise in oil prices in 1973 led to higher production costs across various industries. At the same time, unemployment also increased,...

Assessing Glucose Uptake in the Motor Neurons of Drosophila Larvae with Upregulated Glucose Metabolism

2025

The video demonstrates a technique for measuring glucose uptake in Drosophila larval motor neurons using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based intracellular glucose sensor. After dissecting the larvae to expose the ventral nerve cord, the motor neurons are visualized through the fluorescence emitted by the sensor's donor fluorophore. When stimulated with glucose, FRET between the sensor's donor and acceptor fluorophores triggers the emission of fluorescence from the acceptor,...

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy performed on thin organ and tumor tissue successfully detected natural elements and artificially injected gadolinium (Gd), issued from Gd-based nanoparticles. Images of chemical elements reached a resolution of 100 μm and quantitative sub-mM sensitivity. The compatibility of the setup with standard optical microscopy emphasizes its potential to provide multiple images of a same biological tissue.
