Growth Kinetics Control

Growth Kinetics Control is the deliberate regulation and measurement of how quickly biological populations increase, making it important for understanding and reproducibly managing cell and microbial growth. In biology, researchers control variables such as nutrient availability, temperature, pH, oxygen transfer, and culture density while tracking changes in biomass or cell number over time; these measurements reveal phases of growth and help identify limiting conditions. Applying this approach supports culture optimization, bioprocess development, experimental standardization, and analysis of responses to environmental changes or treatments. It also helps researchers compare growth rates, improve yield, and design biological systems with more predictable outcomes.

This paper describes the assembly process and operation of a bench-scale photosynthetic bioreactor that can be used, in conjunction with other methods, to estimate pertinent kinetic growth parameters. This system continuously monitors the pH, light, and temperature using sensors, a data acquisition and control unit, and open-source data acquisition software.

Enzyme Assays and Kinetics

2023

Enzyme kinetics describes the catalytic effects of enzymes, which are biomolecules that facilitate chemical reactions necessary for living organisms. Enzymes act on molecules, referred to as substrates, to form products. Enzyme kinetic parameters are determined via assays that directly or indirectly measure changes in substrate or product concentration over time. This video will cover the basic principles of enzyme kinetics (including rate equations) and kinetic models. The concepts governing...

Kinetic Energy

2019

Kinetic energy is the ability of an object in motion to do work or enact change. It can take on many forms. For instance, water flowing down a waterfall has kinetic energy. In biological systems, particles of light travel and are absorbed by plants to create chemical energy. Animals consume the chemical energy and give off molecules that carry their scent through the air. They also generate kinetic energy when they run away from predators. Entire systems also possess kinetic energy, like the...

Enzyme Kinetics

Enzymes speed up reactions by lowering the activation energy of the reactants. The speed at which the enzyme turns reactants into products is called the rate of reaction. Several factors impact the rate of reaction, including the number of available reactants. Enzyme kinetics is the study of how an enzyme changes the rate of a reaction. Scientists typically study enzyme kinetics with a fixed amount of enzyme in the controlled environment of a test tube. When more reactant, or substrate, is...
