Hairiness Lines

Hairiness lines are genetically defined laboratory populations or strains that differ consistently in the amount, density, or distribution of body hair, providing a model for studying inherited variation in phenotype. Their differences arise from allelic variation in genes that influence hair follicle formation, development, and growth, and can be maintained or amplified through controlled breeding and selection. In biology, researchers use hairiness lines to investigate genetic architecture, heritability, and interactions between genes and environmental conditions. Comparing these lines can also reveal how developmental pathways produce visible traits and support broader studies of evolution, quantitative genetics, and phenotypic variation.
