Heart Rate Monitoring

Heart rate monitoring is the measurement of how often the heart contracts, providing a useful indicator of cardiovascular function and physiological state. Devices measure cardiac activity directly with electrocardiography, which detects electrical signals, or indirectly with photoplethysmography, which tracks blood-volume changes in tissue using light; the resulting signals are converted into beats per minute and rhythm patterns. In biology, heart rate monitoring helps investigate autonomic regulation, exercise responses, stress, sleep, and cardiovascular health. Continuous measurements from wearable sensors and clinical instruments can reveal changes over time, support research on heart function, and guide assessment of abnormal rhythms.

Regulation of Heart Rates

2025

The regulation of heart rate is a complex process controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), hormonal influences, and intrinsic cardiac mechanisms. The ANS has two main components: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The SNS increases heart rate through the release of norepinephrine and epinephrine, which act on beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart. This action increases the rate of depolarization in the sinoatrial (SA) node, the heart's...

Ultra-high frequency ultrasound is a powerful live imaging tool to examine cardiac abnormalities in small animals. Its noninvasiveness allows maintaining the physiologic state of embryos. Herein, we show the use of M-mode ultrasound to measure the heart rates of embryos at E18.5 in utero.

Factors Influencing Heart Rate

The heart rate, or pulse rate, is a vital indicator of cardiovascular health. It reflects the number of times the heart beats per minute. Various physiological and environmental factors influence heart rate, increasing or decreasing cardiac output. Understanding these factors is crucial for assessing heart function and identifying potential health issues. Let us explore the significant factors affecting heart rate, including age, body temperature, posture, acute pain, chemical influences,...
